Most carpet cleaning machines that are for rent will work with chemical solutions to get rid of the dirt.
If you hire a professional to do the cleaning for you you most probably will have the choice between chemical carpet cleaning and steam cleaning.
If you have allergies, little children, and/or pets I suggest to opt for steam cleaning.
