Long story short, my carpet got so filthy after a lot of foot traffic in the house that just walking across it a few times makes my feet soles stained with black (no exaggeration!). I need a good all-over carpet cleaner product. Any suggestions on what to get? Something that would really hardcore clean, not something that I would use to regularly “freshen” the carpet.

I have always used the liquid extraction method or what is commonly known as “steam cleaning”. And a product called Spot Shot or something like that. It lifts out stains but is a spray on remover. Here is a spring cleaning guide that might be useful:
