The carpet cleaning guy told me the carpet would dry within 4 to 6 hours of cleaning it. We left the house and turned the heater up full blast for 7 hours and when we got back it wasn’t dry yet. That was 48 hours ago and the carpet is still damp and the smell is nauseating. Why is it still wet, and more importantly, how can we get it dried out???? Thanks in advance!!

it is mildew. Turning up the heat helps, but a dehumidifier and a “carpet blower” (available at your local rental center) will do the trick. I had the same problem once. The carpets smelled better before I cleaned them!

If it has only been a few days it is a musty smell you are smelling from the water not mould.
First thing you have to do is dry the carpet. I am going to assume you do not have professional equipment for this.
1/ You will need to turn up the heat, which you did.
2/ Set up a dehumidifier if you have one.
3/ Set up fans to blow on to the carpet. If you can rent carpet blower it would be better. This may take a couple days to dry.
4/ When to carpet is dry you should not be able to smell it.
